Pallotta Refuses to Condemn Strategy after Gottheimer Campaign Fesses Up

Campaign flyers hit mailboxes in the 5th Congressional District earlier this month declaring Republican Frank Pallotta “too much like Trump” to serve in Congress. Another round of ads went out this week saying Pallotta rallies with the former president, “not New Jersey.”Voters might logically assume Pallotta’s opponent in the upcoming Republican primary, Nick De Gregorio, is behind the campaign literature tying Pallotta so closely to a president who lost by 80,000 votes in Bergen County in 2020.But it’s Josh Gottheimer, the Democratic incumbent, trying to influence Republican voters in the June 7 primary — and ultimately the outcome determining whom he will face in November’s general election.

The strategy evidenced in Pennsylvania is being used by other vulnerable Democrats across the country. Most notably, Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer has spent heavily in recent days to boost his 2020 Republican challenger, Frank Pallotta, ahead of New Jersey’s June 7 primary.

Mr. Gottheimer sent a mailer earlier this month highlighting Mr. Pallota’s previous endorsement by Mr. Trump. A New Jersey Democratic strategist familiar with Mr. Gottheimer’s campaign said the mailing was targeted exclusively at Republican voters.

“This was a no-brainer by Josh,” said the strategist, who requested anonymity on the topic. “In what is shaping up to be a difficult year nationally, it’s preferable to run against a known commodity, especially if you can reuse the same playbook that got you elected last time.”

Democrat Congressman Josh Gottheimer’s early May campaign mailer attempting to influence the Republican primary earned a condemnation from Bergen GOP Chairman Jack Zisa on Thursday.Zisa, whose organization awarded its county line to Nick De Gregorio, also had choice words for the Republican candidate that Gottheimer was trying to boost: Frank Pallotta.“Josh Gottheimer and his liberal special interest money meddling in our Republican primary – and trying to prop up a weak, off-the-line candidate like Frank Pallotta – is proof positive that Gottheimer and the Democrats are scared to death of United States Marine Corps Major Nick De Gregorio,” said Zisa. “Perhaps worse is Pallotta’s willingness to be part of the Democrats dirty tricks campaign by refusing to disavow it. The facts are clear: Pallotta was not endorsed by President Trump this year; he was not endorsed by the Bergen GOP; and a vote for him on June 7 is akin to re-electing Gottheimer and keeping another Biden rubber stamp in Congress.”

It looks like Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff) has a preference in the Republican primary to pick his general election opponent. It’s a rematch with Frank Pallotta, the former investment banker from Mahwah. Gottheimer is unopposed in the Democratic primary, but that didn’t stop him from mailing Republican households in a bid to tie Pallotta to Donald Trump.
